The Eizan Train Line<\/a>\n(ei<\/b>zan den<\/b>tetsu<\/i>, or eiden<\/i> for short) is a\nlittle<\/span> train line that runs from north-east Kyoto up into the mountains to\nthe village of Kurama, just past Kibune. I've posted about Kibune many\ntimes, most recently a week<\/span> ago when I visited<\/span> with Thomas<\/a>,\nalthough the area is known more for its summertime dining over the river<\/a> and,\ner, noodle fishing<\/a>.\nAnyway, despite having gone up that way many times, I'd never<\/span> taken the\ntrain, until today.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie's been under the weather for the last week or two, but felt good\nenough today that we all went on a ride<\/span> through Eizan's “Fall Foliage\nTunnel”, a section<\/span> of the track through a mountain<\/span> forest of colorful trees\nthat's lit up by rows of floodlights during the evening.<\/p>\n\n

Japanese love their lightup events — fall colors<\/a>, cherry blossoms<\/a>, and no particular reason<\/a>\n– and I love<\/span> them too, because they're really pretty. The train's\n“tunnel” lightup is part of a larger<\/span> “Kibune Lightup”, which runs in the\nevenings from the 13th to the 30th this month. I've never seen it, but it looks<\/a> extremely photogenic.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, we took a taxi the one mile to the start of the train line, and\ntook a train<\/span> that left at 5pm, a few<\/span> minutes after the 4:49pm sunset...<\/p>\n\n

Twenty minutes later it was pretty dark, especially in the mountains\nunder the trees. As we approached<\/span> the “tunnel”, the driver slowed down and\nturned off all the lights in the train.<\/p>\n\n

It was very nice, but it would have been nicer had people who had been\nsitting for the whole trip not come rushing up trying to take a picture<\/span> in\nfront of me, some using their flash (which turns the window into a mirror<\/span>).\nSigh.<\/p>\n\n

But it was nice for the minute or so that it lasted. A bit later<\/span>, we got\noff at the end of the line, Kurama, one stop past all the lightup stuff at\nKibune. Kurama has a big<\/span> shrine and apparently can hold its own fall-color\nwise during the day, but at night it was more or less deserted. Luckily, we\nfound a small<\/span> restaurant that was still open, and had dinner.<\/p>\n\n

Heading back, we happened to catch one of the special “kirara”\ntrains<\/a> that has a few<\/span> sideways-facing seats, although we opted for\nregular seats. The train<\/span> wasn't that full from the mostly-deserted Kurama,\nbut it filled right up at the next station, Kibune.<\/p>\n\n\n
