It's that time of year again in Kyoto where the trees turn beautiful\ncolors, and the City of Kyoto races to erase them from the face of the earth.<\/p>\n\n

Several miles of street in this area are lined with Ginkgo<\/a> trees, and\neach year the city strips them naked like this, working down one side of\neach street, then up the other. I've heard that this is done because\nstripping the trees like this is easier than cleaning up the leaves. I\ndunno.<\/span> Seems strange.<\/p>\n\n

The guy crossing the street without apparent regard for his life wanted\na sprig<\/span> of yellow leaves, and when he got it, returned to the car he had\nparked illegally near where I was<\/span> standing.<\/p>\n\n

When the light turned red I stepped out into the street a bit<\/span> for the\nshot above, but stepping the other way to the sidewalk and looking the same\ndirection, you see what a wonderful<\/span> effect the trees – the trees with<\/i>\ntheir leaves – have...<\/p>\n\n

Ever year at about this time, crews work their way down one side and\nthen up the other, putting the bulk of each tree into a garbage<\/span> truck.<\/p>\n\n

The road leading to this slight curve is straight for a mile<\/span> or three,\nand you can see the wall of yellow straight the whole time.... at least\nuntil the crews get there.<\/p>\n\n

(This last snapshot doesn't have much going for it except the ability to\nillustrate the scene, but in an attempt to put lipstick on a pig,<\/span> I used the<\/span> virtual version of a gradient<\/span> filter (mentioned in a comment<\/span>\nyesterday<\/a>) to “paint” some lower exposure and lower contrast onto the\nclouds so that the sky retains some detail. Without it, it's a massive<\/span> blog\nof white. I tried<\/span> to have a light<\/span> touch, but it still looks sorta' fakish...<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
