I've been so busy of late that I haven't<\/span> posted much from Anthony's birthday<\/a> when he\nturned six years old, but since my primary intent for this blog is to give\nme something to remember when I finish<\/span> going senile, I'll go ahead now and\nput some more memories from his birthday.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony received a helicopter that he had picked\nform himself<\/a>, but as an extra surprise, he received another helicopter\nfrom Mommy and Daddy, a\nLego<\/span> helicopter<\/a> with a bazillion<\/span> parts...<\/p>\n\n

During our trip to The\nStates<\/a> and back<\/a>,\nAnthony received a number<\/span> of small Lego car sets (like\nthis<\/a>) and impressed us with how he mixed and matched the parts and\ncreatively made all kinds of new contraptions. We wanted<\/span> to encourage that kind\nof exploring\/imagination\/building, so we got this huge, complex helicopter.\n(He seems to have added interest in helicopters since\nhe rode in one<\/a> last month.)<\/p>\n\n

He started putting it together right away...<\/p>\n\n

Lego products are pretty good (and should be for their ridiculous\nprice), but the instructions.... really, I don't<\/span> think I would<\/span> be able to\nmake instructions as bad as they do, even if I really<\/span> really really tried\nto be evil. Their instructions are gratuitously bad<\/i>. They show\nprogressive views of the object being built, with an arrow or two pointing\nto the pieces that were added in the step. That's all fine and dandy\nexcept they point only to some of the added pieces<\/i>. It's up to<\/span> you\nto figure out everything that needs to be added in each step, so you have\nto stare at each pair of steps like one of those “find the differences”\nvisual puzzles.<\/p>\n\n

Every once in a while, you come to a point<\/span> in the construction where you\nrealize that you just can't complete the current step because your\ncontraption is missing some piece that's suppose to already be there, so a\nbit<\/span> of headache-inducing forensics ensues to try to find the step (or\nsteps) that you missed something.<\/p>\n\n

In the end, though, you'll have a few<\/span> random pieces left over that\nyou'll have no idea where they were supposed to have gone.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, so we finished building the helicopter the next day, and he\nplayed with it for a day,<\/span> but I woke<\/span> up one morning to find that the roter\nblades had been repurposed as a rocket<\/span> jet's wings and fuselage....<\/p>\n\n

When I first tried to take a picture of it, Anthony jumped to get into a\nposition<\/span> to peek at me while I did,<\/span> as evidenced in the first picture\nabove. He did that<\/span> once before<\/a>, but\nit'll lose its cuteness really quickly if he does it much more.<\/p>\n\n

I went a bit overboard on the whole “thin depth of field” thing, so you can't actually see much of it. The best shot<\/span> is this next one, I guess.<\/span> I really<\/span> just appreciate the detail in his imagination...<\/p>\n\n
