<sup>1<\/sup><big>\/<\/big>125 sec, <span class='f'>f<\/span>\/6.3, ISO 5000 &mdash;\n<a href=\"\/imageinfo.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fregex.info%2Fi%2FJF7_002558.jpg\">full exif<\/a><\/span>\n<br\/><span class='subtle'><span class='nobr'>I have<\/span> no idea why this shot is so grainy, but the blurriness is because <span class='nobr'>I missed<\/span> focus horrendously<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>During our trip <a href=\"\/blog\/2008-07-26\/881\">to The\nStates<\/a> and <a href=\"\/blog\/2008-09-09\/929\">back<\/a>,\nAnthony received <span class='nobr'>a number<\/span> of small Lego car sets (<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/LEGO-8150-LEGO%C2%AE-Racers-Turbo\/dp\/B000Y89CN4\/\">like\nthis<\/a>) and impressed us with how he mixed and matched the parts and\ncreatively made all kinds of new contraptions. <span class='nobr'>We wanted<\/span> to encourage that kind\nof exploring\/imagination\/building, so we got this huge, complex helicopter.\n(He seems to have added interest in helicopters since\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2008-10-14\/962\">he rode in one<\/a> last month.)<\/p>\n\n<p>He started putting it together right away...<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight'><a name='002569' href=\"\/i\/JF7_002569.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_002569_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"&#8220;Some Assembly Required&#8221; Their instructions are <i>gratuitously bad<\/i>. They show\nprogressive views of the object being built, with an arrow or two pointing\nto the pieces that were added in the step. That's all fine and dandy\n<i>except they point only to some of the added pieces<\/i>. <span class='nobr'>It's up to<\/span> you\nto figure out everything that needs to be added in each step, so you have\nto stare at each pair of steps like one of those &#8220;find the differences&#8221;\nvisual puzzles.<\/p>\n\n<p>Every once in a while, you come to <span class='nobr'>a point<\/span> in the construction where you\nrealize that you just can't complete the current step because your\ncontraption is missing some piece that's suppose to already be there, so <span class='nobr'>a\nbit<\/span> of headache-inducing forensics ensues to try to find the step (or\nsteps) that you missed something.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the end, though, you'll have <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> random pieces left over that\nyou'll have no idea where they were supposed to have gone.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anyway, so we finished building the helicopter the next day, and he\nplayed with it for <span class='nobr'>a day,<\/span> but <span class='nobr'>I woke<\/span> up one morning to find that the roter\nblades had been repurposed as <span class='nobr'>a rocket<\/span> jet's wings and fuselage....<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name='002586' href=\"\/i\/JF7_002586.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_002586_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"Ready For Takeoff (Blastoff?)  --  Kyoto, Japan  --  Copyright  2008 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i002586\"\nindexhint=\"left\"\ntitle=\"Ready For Takeoff (Blastoff?)  --  Kyoto, Japan  --  Copyright  2008 Jeffrey Eric Francis Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Nikkor 85mm f\/1.4 &mdash;
