{"id":100,"date":"2005-11-14T18:31:41","date_gmt":"2005-11-14T09:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-11-14\/100"},"modified":"2005-11-14T18:32:57","modified_gmt":"2005-11-14T09:32:57","slug":"presidential-visit-means-big-hubbub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-11-14\/100","title":{"rendered":"Presidential Visit means Big Hubbub"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>\n\nWhat a hubbub going on in Kyoto this week, the likes of which this little\nbackwater nowhere-ville has not seen in its short 1,211 years. <span class='nobr'>I live about<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a mile<\/span> away from the old imperial grounds, upon which the <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.yasuimoku.co.jp\/geihinkan\/index.html\">Kyoto State Guest\nHouse<\/a> is situated, in which President Bush will stay during his one-day\nvisit (arriving tomorrow night, leaving the next night).\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAs far as I know, he's not planning on coming my direction at all, yet\nthere's <span class='nobr'>a policeman<\/span> in bullet-proof vest on most every street corner around\nhere (just standing around, looking, uh, vigilant). <span class='nobr'>The President<\/span> isn't\narriving until tomorrow (Tuesday) night, but the police have been on\nstation since at least Saturday. In addition, many street corners now have\naccordion gates on rollers waiting to be slung across the street to block\ntraffic. <span class='nobr'>I asked<\/span> one officer what they were for, and he said basically\n&#8220;just in case&#8221;. Perhaps the military helicopters overflying my house today\nin pairs are for the same reason. What <span class='nobr'>a hubbub.<\/span>\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe President is slated to go the other direction from me, to <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/pic.regex.info\/amf\/2004-12-31\/2\">Kinkakuji<\/a>, the\n    &#8220;Golden Pavilion&#8221;. They have <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.shokoku-ji.or.jp\/english\/e_kinkakuji\/webcamera\/index.html\"><span class='nobr'>a\ncamera<\/span><\/a> which updates every five minutes -- perhaps he'll make <span class='nobr'>a cameo<\/span>\nappearance. <span class='nobr'>Or perhaps<\/span> not -- it seems to have stopped two hours ago.\n<b>[ update: <\/b> 8 days later, the camera is working again <b>]<\/b>\n\n<\/p><p>\n\n(Mr President, take my advice and skip Kinkakuji, and hit <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/other-writings\/a-visit-to-ryouan-temple-kyoto\/\">Ryouanji<\/a>\ninstead. <span class='nobr'>It's very near<\/span> Kinkakuji, but much more pleasant <span class='nobr'>a place.<\/span> Also,\nthe grounds are free, so you can save <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span> of my tax dollars.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nIn any case, <span class='nobr'>I'm thankful<\/span> that <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> have to drive anywhere tomorrow or\nthe next day.
