Sakura and the Main Gate of the Heian Shrine (With Desktop Background)
April 11th, 2007 11:01pm JST (18 years, 10 months ago)

We ran out of milk at lunch time, and in stepping out the front door on the way to the convenience store, for some reason the view struck me in a way I hadn't noticed before. So I got the milk, then went back to take a picture.

Living so close to it, the gate certainly has appeared plenty of times in photos on my blog, including:

Two views (snowy and sunny) of the main gate of the Heian Shrine Fire Department Parade, and my new D200 Camera The main gate of the Heian Shrine, from a different angle Weddings [...]

The main gate of the Heian Shrine, from a different angle
February 2nd, 2006 8:56pm JST (20 years ago)

It seems it's been months without a sunny day, so when we finally had one last week, Anthony and I took a walk to a nearby playground, and on the way I gave the wide end of my new 18-200mm zoom a go. I don't think anyone would call it the "blizzard of '05" but the other day Kyoto certainly did get more snow than normal. It tended to come in heavily, and then be bright and crisp, and repeat. Here are two shots I happened to take an hour and a half apart, of the main gate of the Heian Shrine, as seen from my veranda:

Heian Shrine Gate From a New Perspective
May 22nd, 2014 4:43pm JST (11 years, 9 months ago)

The shot above is from quite the different vantage point from normal. I've posted many views of the main gate of the Heian Shrine on my blog over the years, such as this shot more than eight years ago. My blog's proximity search of the area reveals many more.

After living here so long it's a challenge to find something fresh, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a new vantage point the other day when a new business opened up after a long year of building demolition and then new construction.

The new business, wedding venue Rokusisui (六絲水), held [...]

More Shots from Last Month’s Visit to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine
July 25th, 2013 12:36am JST (12 years, 7 months ago)

This post is sort of a continuation of "Hoverfly and Hydrangea", from a trip last month with Aeron to the gardens of the Heian Shrine (平安神宮) in eastern Kyoto.

The light was really not very good (mostly quite harsh), and I was enjoying the conversation with Aeron more than I was paying attention to the photography, but I thought I'd share a few more pictures anyway.

Some of the trees in the garden had wonderfully "interesting", twisted shapes, though I had no idea what to do with them camera wise. As I said, the light was often really harsh, which [...]
