Also, Sean over at Lightroom Blog\nis keeping a <a href='http:\/\/lightroom-blog.com\/2013\/06\/10\/lightroom-5-resources\/'>list of tutorial\/review links<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The most exciting new things for me are <b>&#8220;Smart\nPreviews&#8221;<\/b> (<span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> work with my entire 130k library of images on my\ndisk-starved laptop), <b>&#8220;Upright&#8221; perspective correction<\/b> in Develop,\nwhere <span class='nobr'>I can<\/span> easily correct for my bad habit of not holding the camera\nlevel, and the new <b>advanced healing brush<\/b>, to paint away things you\ndon't want in the image. <span class='nobr'>I also like<\/span> the new <b>True Full Screen<\/b>\nmode.<\/p>\n\n<p><b>Warning Warning Warning<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>One thing I don't like is a very dangerous Publish-related bug\nthat remains in the final 5.0, that can cause you to delete your master\nimages without even realizing it!<\/p>\n\n<div style='border:solid 1px #333; padding:3px; padding-right:1em'>\n<b style='padding-left:1em; color:#F66'>UPDATE (Nov 9):<\/b> <span class='nobr'>I believe<\/span> the bug is fixed in Lr5.3RC: <a href='\/blog\/2013-11-09\/2333'>see here<\/a>\n<br\/><b style='padding-left:1em; color:#833'>UPDATE (Oct 25):<\/b> Possible workaround discovered: <a href='\/blog\/2013-10-25\/2326'>see here<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n\n<p>The problem is that the selection\n<i>shown<\/i> in <span class='nobr'>a Publish<\/span> Grid may not be the actual set of selected\nimages, and so when you intend to perform operations (update metadata,\ndelete images, export, etc.) on what you see as the selected images, it might not happen...\n<span class='nobr'>a completely<\/span> different set of images may be affected (updated, deleted, exported).<\/p>\n\n<p>In my eyes, this is just shocking. This screenshot shows the problem,\nusing the Publish Collection for my <a\nhref='https:\/\/plus.google.com\/u\/0\/photos\/110839411749298049815\/albums\/5831815186739038721'>&#8220;Selected\nBlog Photos&#8221; gallery on Google Plus<\/a> as an example:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href='\/i\/lr\/Lr5-Publish-Selection-bug.png'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/lr\/Lr5-Publish-Selection-bug_sm.png\" width=\"690\" height=\"473\"\nid=\"iLr5_Publish_Selection_bug\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class='caption'>Example Manifestation of the Bug<\/span>\n<br\/>Notice how the selection appears differently between Grid and the Filmstrip?\n<\/div>\n\n<p>The selection shown in Filmstrip is the actual selection... it's the\nselection shown in Grid that this bug causes to sometimes be wrong. <span class='nobr'>In the example<\/span> above, the two <a\nhref='\/blog\/2013-02-17\/2212'>water-polo shots of my\n10-year-old son<\/a> are shown as selected in the Filmstrip, and they are\nthe ones that any operations will actually act on, yet in Grid, six\nunrelated images are shown as selected. They are not actually selected, and\ninvoked operations will not act on them.<\/p>\n\n<p>The moral of the story is:<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-left:2em'><b>In Lr5, never select images in Grid in <span class='nobr'>a Publish<\/span> Service.<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>Even using the <i>next-image<\/i> arrow key does not properly update the true selection, though it\ndoes update in Grid, making you think everything is working fine. <span class='nobr'>It's a very<\/span> dangerous bug.<\/p>\n\n<p>It's best to avoid working in Grid in Publish until this is fixed, but if you must, be sure to\ndo so with the Filmstrip also open, and use the Filmstrip to make and identity selections.<\/p>\n\n<p><i><a href='\/blog\/2013-06-12\/2270'>Continued here...<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><b>Lightroom 5<\/b> has been released... see the announcement at Adobe.<\/p> <p>There's a bunch of new stuff.... a good place to start your own investigation is Victoria Bampton's \"What's New in Lightroom 5\" and \"What's New in Lightroom 5.0 Beta\" articles.
