Touch of Color from the Nanzen Temple
November 21st, 2007 7:42pm JST (15 years, 4 months ago)

My head is swimming due to a cold I came down with yesterday, so to brighten things up a bit, here's a touch of color from the same outing here in Kyoto, Japan that produced the fall-foliage desktop backgrounds I posted the other day.

Zooming back a bit....

You can see these same trees in the "Placing Incense" photo my summer "More From Nanzenji" post.

On the Way to the Nanzen Temple….
June 14th, 2007 12:20am JST (15 years, 9 months ago)

On the way to the Nanzen Temple the other day (as seen in this post and in this post), we stopped by the location where I made the vine on bamboo fence shots last fall. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the same vine had come back to life, so decided to take some more pictures.

In preparation, wanting to be able to set the proper color balance later, I pulled a white business card I happened to have from my pocket and asked Anthony to hold it such that it was illuminated by the same light as the [...]

Family Moments at the Nanzen Temple
June 10th, 2007 9:04pm JST (15 years, 10 months ago)

This morning we took a short bike ride to Kyoto's Nanzen Temple (南禅寺), one of the more famous temples in Japan. I was there just the other day with some friends, and it's been featured in my blog before (such as this Photography of Katsunori Shimada, a few shots from a visit two years ago, and another shot or two by Shimada-san). It's one of those things that's so close that we sort of take it for granted, so most photography I do there still awaits processing. But I liked today images especially, so they jump to the head of [...]

A Visit to Nanzen Temple (Kyoto, Japan)
November 9th, 2005 8:13pm JST (17 years, 5 months ago)

This morning Fumie and I made an impromptu visit to Nanzenji (南禅寺 - the Nanzen Temple), which is a few minutes away by bicycle (map).

We brought some coffee and tasty bread, parked the bikes, and walked around a bit. We've been there many times, and this time was only a short visit, but in addition to the funny picture shown in an earlier post, it yielded a few nice shots as well:

The huge (three meter tall?) stone lantern near the main gate.

Behind me is the "main gate" of the temple (which is inside [...]

More Fall Foliage: Kyoto Incline, Mountains, Temples, and Nanzenji
November 29th, 2005 2:27pm JST (17 years, 4 months ago)

It's fall in Kyoto and that means lots of little trips to see the magnificent foliage. Anthony and I took a long walk last week with Katsunori Shimada, my good friend of 10+ years. We went to the Kyoto Biwako Canal Museum (about the canal built in the 1880s that brought water and Japan's first electricity to Kyoto), then up the Kyoto Incline and into the mountains and temples and paths back behind it. (Five pages of pictures here.)

Our day was mostly uncrowded until during our return we descended from the mountains into the rear corner of [...]
