“Hot Yoga”

Holy cow, I'm drained. I tried something called “hot yoga” (ホットヨガ) today at a local gym (Inspa in eastern Kyoto, near Sanjo Kawaramachi). I'd never done yoga... it seems to be simple stretching and balance, but “hot yoga” is doing it in a humid room heated to about 36°C (97°F). Fumie had just joined the gym and really liked this particular class.

Considering that I am spectacularly unflexible, I thought perhaps it'd be beneficial in limbering me up, so I thought I'd give it a try. I was not prepared for just how hot/humid it was, though I would have been fine if the class were just 45 minutes, but it was an hour and that last 15 minutes utterly drained me to the bone.

I will sleep well tonight.

Bikram Yoga is the best. When I was in the States, I used to go all the time. I’ve been over seas for a while and we’re going back now. I can’t wait to start up again.

I’ve heard a bunch of people claim that it helped with their knee and back problems.

It drains me but I remember also feeling amazing after the soreness wore off.

Reading this post gave me traumatic Memphis flash-backs. Except it wasn’t 60 minutes being in a humid 97 degree place, it was 8 months at a time.

Please excuse me while I go stand outside in the cold drizzle and smile.

I’m at a teacher of Bikram Yoga at http://aucklandgyms.co.nz/yoga/bikram-yoga-north-shore/
and I can for sure attest to the difficulty for beginners. But when you get used to the heat, your mind and body will be 100x improved.
